Top 15 Treatment For Mitral Valve Prolapse

June 11th, 2011

Heart palpitations, fatigue, anxiety, a feeling of dread, shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping. For most people with mitral valve prolapse, the symptoms are mild, but often quite uncomfortable to do something.

If the defect of the valve is sweet, your doctor may such when prescribe anticoagulants as beta blockers. stiff-necked extra harms insist on an approach to several. Below, a good way explore the two main forms of treating representative addressing regurgitation next ruthless stenosis: mitral valve repair (MVR) later of replacement.

A MV with the intent of is (i.e. reduced before limited) stenotic before reflux (i.e. leaks) affects current blood connecting rooms. dressed in the defence of the stenosis, the home is required directed to do harder led to pump the blood through a tube diminished hung on the ventricle. Fury defence of regurgitation, leaking bottle of blood beginning the back of the hooked on ventricle home through pamphlets beats of the MV. This bottle trick headed for arrhythmias in addition endocarditis (infection).

Here are the 15 best treatment for mitral valve prolapse, noted by people living with it:

1 Avoid caffeine
2. Air conditioning of
3. Avoid alcohol
4. Drink plenty of water
5. Changes in diet
6 Meditation
7 Xanax
8 Avoid sugar

10 Eating salt
11. Cognitive therapy
12 Exercise
13 Propranolol
14 Acupuncture
15 Epsom Salt bath

To navigate the graph above:

The top quadrant of the right page shows the most popular treatments and more effective, and the top quadrant of the left page shows treatments that few people have tried but have above-average efficiency, so that they are options to consider (e.g. Xanax, eating of salt).

The treatments in the right lower quadrant are those that many people have tried but who have efficiency below average (e.g., vitamins B, aspirin), and treatments in the left lower quadrant are reported as popular nor effective, so you can this be considered in the choice of treatment (e.g., St. John’s wort, Wellbutrin).

Valve Mitral Regurgitation Caused Death Of Elizabeth Taylor — Could Affect You?

June 11th, 2011

I am saddened that Elizabeth Taylor died recently of heart failure. In his appreciation of him, film critic Roger Ebert said in the Chicago Sun-Times, “a few deaths can we say that the end of the era, but is hers.”.

Mitral valve of the heart

The heart is composed of four rooms and four valves which open to allow blood across to the other Chamber of the heart and body and back. Gates, acting as gates, then immediately shut down to prevent blood from running back where he comes from. The mitral valve is similar to a mouth with leaflets which resemble lips open and close. When I saw it in action on an Echocardiogram, a test that uses sound waves to show images in movement of the heart, I thought that it looked like a very sensual mouth. Each of the valves is different. But stands out because it looks like a mouth, the mitral valve. Blood comes out of the lungs carrying oxygen and enters the left atrium of the heart. Mouth of the mitral valve opens to allow blood to pour through into the left ventricle. As the left ventricle contracts, the farm of the mitral valve and the aortic valve opens to allow blood leaving the heart and leave the body.

A mitral valve can start a leak. This can vary a condition that is a minor and requires no treatment for a serious problem that leads to a weakened heart and heart failure. In the case of Elizabeth Taylor, he led to heart failure and its symptoms should have included fatigue, and difficulty breathing.

Edward k. Kasper, M.D., Director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital clinical cardiology, what can go wrong with a mitral valve I asked to speak a little. I should mention for disclosure that Ed is my cardiologist and co-authored the book with me living with heart failure, the Misnamed, poorly understood Condition well:

a leaky mitral valve – mitral regurgitation, is common and has multiple causes. Most people tolerate a leaky valve well, but some need surgery to fix the leak. The remedy is preferred to replacement. The MitraClip (which has been used for Elizabeth Taylor) is a new technique to repair mitral regurgitation in the laboratory of catheterization rather than in the operating room. There is no long-term study of comparison of this technique from the repair gold standard – that I know. Remedy is currently the gold standard for those who have severe mitral regurgitation and symptoms of heart failure. Results are notably better improved symptoms and survival in patients with repair rather than replacement

That takes a person to a mitral valve leaking heart failure?

The leak to the left atrium increases pressure in the left atrium. This increase in pressure in the left atrium is passed back to the lungs, causing fluid to seep into the lungs, leading to heart failure. With time, the requirements of severe mitral regurgitation on the left ventricle will result in a weakened left ventricle, dilated cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle). We try to avoid it in operation before it gets to this point.

Mitral regurgitation can also be a consequence of cardiomyopathy dilated – mitral valve orifice enlarges as the left ventricle is expanding. The leaflets of the mitral valve not enlarge. Therefore, they close is more properly, leading to mitral regurgitation.

It is easy to see why anyone would want to opt for the Evalve MitraClip on open heart surgery. The MitraClip is little different from a common test known as an angiogram, in which a catheter is passed through the femoral vein in the groin to the heart. However, in this repair procedure, the catheter guides a clip of the mitral valve where the polyester fabric covered metal clip is positioned on the leakage and is falling under the flaps open and back up, overall attachment open valve leaflets. The manufacturer, Abbott, shows a video herehow blood is still able to pass through each side of the binding.

Elizabeth Taylor has obtained its repair MitraClip, a year and a half so he must have worked for some time. Then about six weeks ago, she was hospitalized with heart failure at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she died with his family at his bedside. For more information on mitral regurgitation, see this NIH site.

Heart failure has many other causes. High blood pressure can damage the lining of blood vessels leading to deposits of cholesterol. Coronary artery disease causes heart attacks. Tue heart in cardiac muscle, forcing the rest of the heart to work hard and in doing so, get the big and small. Only about half of the persons who develop heart failure have a weak heart. In another case of heart failure, left ventricular becomes rigid and the heart does not correctly. And in some heart failure, the heart itself is normal but connecting blood vessels are not or a valve may be too narrow. In all these cases, a person is deemed to have heart failure because the heart and the vascular system are not able to provide the body with blood and oxygen he needs.

Subacute Drug Eluting Stent Thrombosis Caused By Stent Underexpansion: Evaluation By Optical Coherence Tomography

June 11th, 2011
Photo of Angioplasty

We present the case report of a patient with subacute drug eluting ST segment myocardial infarction due to a Syndrom of stent in the proximal segment of the left circumflex artery (LCX). Six days before a total chronic occlusion was treated in the middle of the LCX segment by the overlap of two of drug eluting stents. (TCO) optical coherence tomography has been useful to demonstrate stent underexpansion segment overlaping as the main mechanism of early stent thrombosis. This case is illustrative on the potential role of the OCT to identify mechanisms of ST and thus guide the PCI procedure. In addition, our case…

Stents implanted in patients 15,147 that were entered in the register of multinational. The average age of the sample was 62 years, 30.4% were diabetic, 10% had an Charlson comorbidity index ≥3 and 44% presented with acute coronary syndrome or myocardial infarction. The sample was evaluated for specific and probable ST (as defined by the Consortium of academic research) and MB, with the definition of a parochial (safety and efficacy of enoxaparin in PCI), and their relationship of dual antiplatelet therapy (PTBA) and clinical results of 1 year.

??Only 2 13,749 patients (0.015%) experienced MB and ST during the entire period of follow-up 1 year.

Need Surgery To Correct My Mitral Valve Regurgitation If I Continue The Symptoms?

June 10th, 2011

I have mitral valve prolapse because I am 14 and I think that it is also one with VALVULAIRE MITRALE regurgitation. I’ve used the experience of severe anxiety, panic attacks, chest pain, etc. at this time and 37 now, continue to have depression, anxiety (now I am taking an antidepressant), fatigue, palpitations but don’t know if it is directly to the mitral valve. I have read that my symptoms are all related to the valve mitral regurgitaton but I don’t know. My doctor ordered an Echocardiogram yesterday and he confirmed for mitral valve prolapse / regurgitation (if you do not know its slight, moderate or severe). What this means is I need surgery and will be my symptoms disappear if I do?

Replacement and repair of heart valve can relieve symptoms and prolong life. The success rate for heart valve surgery is strong and growing. This is a technically demanding operation that requires the surgeon and the surgical team to have a high level of skills. Clinical Mayo has state-of-the-art facilities and a strong commitment to research and education that attracts leaders in cardiac surgery.

Valve replacement is to remove the faulty valve and its replacement with an artificial valve (prosthesis) by sewing at the ring of the natural valve. About 95% of all the valve replacements are performed for the mitral or aortic valves.

Clots in more stent coronary likely in the morning
Experts suggest that changing drug dosing times may have protective effect
http://www.NLM.NIH.gov/MedlinePlus/news/fullstory_109055.html

(Monday February 21 HealthDay News) – prior research has shown that peaks stroke risk very early in the morning. Now, a new study finds that blood clots in stents – a potential trigger for stroke and heart attack – also follow a circadian pattern and peak, early in the morning.

In the discussion section the authors wrote that “because traditional socio-economic factors that plague health care racial disparities were counted in our study, in addition to mechanisms such as genetic differences by what predicts black ST [stent thrombosis] must be prosecuted.”

Overall mortality over three years was also higher among African-Americans: 24.9% to 13.1% for the other races.

Although rare, blood clots formed after a stent is placed in an artery to prop it open can quickly lead to a heart attack or death, often even if the patient receives a quick treatment, efforts to prevent the complication a priority.

And this new study, published in the February issue of the JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, can point to a possible way of prevention.

“Knowing [stent thrombosis] can occur early in the morning may suggest that drugs used by early in the morning,” said Dr. David r. Holmes, Jr., a cardiologist with the clinic of Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota, lead author of the study “we need to give medication twice a day to cover that.”

While “we cannot change circadian body”, added Dr. Jacob Shani, President of the Heart Institute of Moses Maimonides in the city of New York, “maybe we can divide the dose of anti-platelet therapies in a dose in the morning and a dose of night.”

Usually drugs antiplatelet or clot-busting to prevent stent thrombosis are given in the night, before the person will go to sleep.

For this study, the authors have spent reviewed records of 124 patients, who had arrived at the Mayo Clinic with the formation of blood clots in stents between February 1995 and August 2009.

The events of stent thrombosis reached a peak at 7 o’clock in the morning and a low 8: 00 am. After adjustments, early stent thrombosis is always associated with significantly from the hours of the morning.

Blood clots in stents also reached another statistically significant peak in late July and early August. The latter finding suggests that additional activities in the warmer months could contribute to the rise, according to researchers.

Although the factors of potential risk documented in some patients, such as heavy physical exertion or medical factors such as surgery, infection and do not take properly, the drug could have triggered some of the formation of blood clots, data suggest of circadian rhythms has also played a role, the researchers noted.

A number of factors can explain the rhythms of stent thrombosis, said the authors. Heart rate, pressure blood and levels of several different hormones were found to peak in the morning.

In some studies, the researchers found that this genetic difference occurs more often in African Americans and white patients. Analysis of blood or genetic testing determine whether a person is a “poor metabolizer” clopidogrel.

“We know that the body becomes fundamentally more [most likely clotting] hypercoagulable in the morning.” “We know that the platelet activity increased in the morning, so that all these things together are more likely for someone to suffer an event of platelets, such as a heart attack, stroke, or in this case, stent thrombosis, in the morning,”, said Dr. Jeffrey Berger, Assistant Professor of medicine at the University of New York Langone Medical Center in New York.

Unnecessary Risks Of Stents Cause Of Patient Safety And The Cost Of Billions

June 8th, 2011

There was an intense Federal review on hospitals in recent years reports of doctors by placing unnecessary Stents in patients. Stents are a large company. Medicare only past 25.7 billion over 2004-2009 cardiac stent procedures. While spending wasted are alarming, even worse, is the medical risks and collateral damage suffered by the victims of the fraud of doctor.

The stent BIORESORBABLE (BVS) is completely translucent and transparent to x-rays, leading to challenges in the use of conventional invasive imaging modalities. Agreement between quantitative coronary angiography (CQM), intravascular Ultrasound (ivus) and the BVS (OCT) optical coherence tomography is unknown. Forty five patients enrolled in the cohort absorb B1 study underwent a coronary angiography, intravascular ultrasound, and OCT immediately after implantation BVS and 6 months. OCT estimated length stent with nominal length accuracy (95% CI of the difference:? 0.19; 0.37 and? 0.47; 0.15 mm2 for the line baseline and 6 months respectively), while QCA incurred consistent underestimation of the same order of magnitude in two time…

The results of the two examinations have indicated that two physicians, Dr. Ehab Morcos and Dr. George Bousamra, implanted 149 unnecessary stents in 141 patients in 2010. The two physicians resigned in January after questioning about their practices. The two were responsible for 750 2 000 stent procedures made in 2010 at Westmoreland hospital. There are a total of seven cardiologists and two Interventional Radiologists who conducted the implants of stent in Westmoreland hospital at this time.

The most widely accepted standard for the use of a stent is when obstruction of the artery is superior to 70%. The mentioned 149 procedures were for patients who had less than 50 percent blocked. All 141 patients received a letter from the hospital, encourage them to make an appointment with a cardiologist at the hospital.

The names of doctors will be provided to the Office of the Inspector General in the Department of Health and Human Services, so they can investigate the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. Doctors worked at Westmoreland hospital for the past five years, but were not employed by the hospital. According to the Department of Pennsylvania licenses doctors are in good and due form, and no there was no disciplinary file despite these allegations.

This abuse and fraud is not an isolated case. Last December, Saint-Joseph in Towson, MD medical Centre, was reported to have implanted 585 stents which were not necessary. So far, more than 100 patients have filed suits of law against the hospital. Of the have become unnecessary medical procedures pose serious health risks for patients and they can cause pain and suffering. Stenting can cause clots leading to heart attacks and many patients is forced to take blood thinning drugs for the rest of their lives.

If you or a loved one believes that have been the victim of a cardiologist negligent, contact Dr. Deborah Maliver today for a free review of your case. Dr. Maliver spent his legal career to pursue those who defraud patients and cause harm to patients.

30 Stents In 1 Day, Roast Pork And More? Cardiobrief

June 3rd, 2011

[Update]
Mark Midei, interventional cardiologist who was accused of implantation of unnecessary hundreds of stents to the Medical Centre of Saint-Joseph in Maryland, was congratulated by Abbott Laboratories to 30 Stenting in one day.? “I heard thru the grapevine that you had a day really outstanding with Xience Friday laboratories, perhaps setting the implant record single day,”wrote an official Abbott.” ?Two days later, Abbott spent $2,159? a Midei barbecue House which included a? whole smoked pork and other fasteners.

Attack this second happened just five days after I have my cancer was operated and was still in the hospital.?”He considers me like a repetition of the first “false heart attack”, and I argued with my internist to this effect.

And then of held nine years later, a second attack occurred, it a very traumatic period in his life, at the hospital for an operation of resection of colon cancer. She described like this:?

Abbott has provided the following statement to the Sun: “Dr. Midei has been a doctor highly regarded in its field, with whom Abbott had consulted in the past.” Our affiliation with Dr. Midei completed earlier this year. ?

After Midei was forced to leave St. Joseph he worked as a consultant paid for Abbott, helping the company its stents market. According to the Sun?Officials said Abbott was “the right thing to do because”he helped us so many times over the years.”" “However, after advertising on his case became more intense, the company has been prematurely end his visit the Japan to promote the Xience V. Midei subsequently worked in Saudi Arabia? the Prince Salman Heart Center but that employment was also abandoned due to bad publicity.

Abbott was not happy with the consequences of the Midei case. After the series of articles in the Baltimore Sun has begun to appear, stent procedures has decreased in the region, including a dramatic decline of 46% in Saint-Joseph. According to the Sun:

An Abbott official has suggested that local connections or the “Philly mob” should intervene to silence columnist Baltimore Sun Jay Hancock for its coverage of the scandal, saying: “someone must take this writer outside and kick his ass door!”

Midei attorney told the Sun that the report only adds to the evidence against Midei and believes that Midei will be defended.

In December 2008, a Regional Director of sales Abbott praised the sales representative who has worked with Midei:

That you are about to complete another year in the top 5 in the rankings, I wish to congratulate you once again this remarkable feat. In addition, relationships have trained in accounts as St. Joe, Union and Hopkins are characteristic of that each rep strives to be in their accounts. In my 15 years of being in this case, I have never seen personal relationships as strong as those that you have developed with Mark Midei of Dr., [name redacted] and [name redacted]. “

Following the Commission of the Senate Finance press release:

Baucus, Grassley overview of Millions of taxpayers squandered, consider the reports of hundreds of settlements of irregular heart Stent

Release managers finance report detailing of relationship between the physician, manufacturer of medical devices, model Possible of settlements of Stent wasteful, unnecessary

Washington, DC.

The Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today released a report of the Finance Board describing in detail the case of a doctor who have implanted near 600 stents potentially unnecessary 2007 through mid-2009 at the Medical Centre of Saint-Joseph in Towson, Maryland and its relationship with the manufacturer of stentsAbbott Laboratories. ? The Senate report concluded that settlements of questionable stent cost program Medicare 3.8 million during this period. ? Baucus and Grassley have launched their investigation of the role of the Monitoring Committee to the Medicare and Medicaid programs and the efforts of Senators to protect taxpayers against waste, fraud and abuse after media reports revealed alleged improper procedures.

“Patient hospital expect their care based on medical need, not profit.?” This report exposes alarming evidence that patients at the Medical Centre of St. Joseph received unnecessary and potentially dangerous stent implants times – a model that is shocking, disturbing and shameful. ? Physicians should not perform interventions invasive medical patients did not need, and certainly the taxpayers should not be paying for these settlements wasteful and illegitimate, ” said Baucus.” “Even more disconcerting is that this could be a sign of a larger national trend for the use of a waste of medical device, this is why we have included aggressive new tools in the new law of health to fight against fraud, waste and abuse.?” “Health law improves the screening of medical providers and increased surveillance of eradication of fraud, waste and abuse like this shining spotlight on problems like these and help ensure the case as this breed.”

“The best response to these concerns is total and effective peer transparency” Grassley said.

Health surveillance report also examined St. Joseph Medical Center response to the discovery of the questionable settlements. ? The report notes that the Maryland doctor on his list placed Abbott Laboratories of “”victory project”cardiologists of stent high volume and paid at least two social events at the doctor, including a barbecue and crab dinner House, in 2008?” After St. Joseph Medical Center prohibits the physician practice, Abbott Laboratories has hired the physician to promote and prepare security reports on its Stents in China and the Japan, according to internal documents, the company has provided to the Commission.

Procedures that are often used to treat a heart attack, such as bypass surgery, coronary angioplasty or stent implants, are not useful for treating broken heart syndrome. These procedures to deal with obstructed, arteries are not the cause of broken heart syndrome.

Fiscal year 2004 to fiscal year 2009, Medicare part program paid a 25.7 billion more for cardiac stent procedures and about 108.9 billion $ 6.9 million procedures related to medical devices. ? Fraud, waste and abuse in healthcare system cost us at least $ 60 billion per year – three per cent of total health expenditures. ? Other apparently irregular cardiac procedures similar cases have been discovered in medical facilities across the country. ? Baucus and Grassley have launched their consideration of this matter to find models that could have implications for the prevention of waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid.

Heart Valve Repair?

June 3rd, 2011

As of the thousands of others, I could cope with mitral valve repair work some time on the road. Currently, it is just a valve heart leaky, or the valve mitral regurgitation of degree moderate. Should he progress to serious, I want to be armed with information.

Replacement of the aortic physical condition

Aortic physical hybrid condition as well as aortic replacement

Apparently, not all people with serious valve mitral regurgitation require replacement. Instead, highly experienced surgical hands remedy can be much safer in terms of less complications and survival. According to the BMJ article, “the main drawback of repair of the valve is that not all heart surgeons to perform which is often technically requiring surgical intervention.” No comparison studies have been conducted and probably never will be because “solid data favouring the remedy are unethical to conduct such a trial today.

And then I fell on recent statistics for the United States only, “the last decade, that the practice of valvular surgery has changed significantly.” Surgical treatment for mitral disease passed to mainly a repair, replacement step, “an article of 2009 in the Journal of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.” “The procedures of Mitral Valve Repair increased 19% in 1998 to 46% in 2005, with valve mitral replacement decreases over the same period”.

How could find a highly skilled surgeon who made many valve repairs… should never need? I turned to Google (where else?). Here is an incomplete list of medical centers U.S. that make surgery mitral repair. Their website explains the different types of repair techniques; for example, valvuloplasty, which aims to “strengthen the valve leaflets to provide more support and leaving them sealed.” This support comes ring – like device attached surgeons outside of the opening of the valve. ?

What is interesting, that I want most is annual rates by the surgeon to repair, serious complications and mortality. Dream it. Most often, the claims are widely expressed, vague or non-existent. Most Web sites are surprisingly disguised same on how long their surgeons were mitral valve repair.

My list is of no particular order, except that I liked the first site the best because it is the most complete. For example, there is a “Results” section, which explains why mortality rates a hospital are more quality standard: “Heart surgery has become progressively more secure over the past ten years, the emphasis on the”mortality rate”as a marker of quality has evolved towards a better understanding of the morbidity and other measures of results.” A bio for each full surgeon with his CV is provided, and the site refers to the skills of a surgeon who specializes in reoperation and re-repairs. There is even a section entitled “General disclosure” that describes the financial relations between his doctors and the devices connected to the valve industry! The FAQ section answers that questions a potential patient could never think surgery of mitral repair. No other Web site I found is similar to provide crucial information.

Of course, the following centres are marketing Nouveau surgical talent on the Internet, but what we have–other than a recommendation for a primary care physician or cardiologist. It is not as there is a source independent, accessible to the public of the stats for all surgeons who are valve mitral repair surgery. See what you think. Perhaps you will find the best Web sites.

The Centre of repair of Mitral Valve at Mount Sinai, New York City Hospital
Claims: “Our Centre now offers patients the percentages highest valve mitral repair anywhere in the world.”. Our rate of repair of mitral valve (99%) and quality (< 1% mortality) are national benchmarks. Our success rate by avoiding a mitral valve replacement in patients with mitral valve prolapse, approaches 100%. We also have mitral valve expertise of repair for patients with advanced cardiomyopathy. If patients have associated with atrial fibrillation, we offer later in surgery concomitant arrhythmia, including maze procedure. We can also perform mitral valve repair surgery with approaches to minimally invasive, when appropriate. ?

Cleveland Clinic
Claims: “[Our] surgeons have greater experience of the world with the repair of the mitral valve.”…. “[Our] surgeons are pioneers in the development of little invasive techniques to repair VALVULAIRE MITRALE.”. At Cleveland Clinic, almost all leaks mitral valves are repaired rather than replaced, patients to the ideal results. “The majority of these operations is performed minimally invasive, ensuring rapid recovery.”… “The Cleveland Clinic surgeons conducted more than 11,000 valve mitral repair, more extensive experience unique in the world.”. In 2006, the primary repair isolated mitral valvular hospital mortality was 0%. Almost all isolated mitral valve repairs can be performed minimally invasive. ?

Claims: None

The Mayo Clinic
Claims: “[We] surgeons have extensive experience in cardiac valve surgery, performing hundreds of surgeries each year. [Our] surgeons to perform treatment of mitral valve with minimally invasive surgery, which means small incisions resulting in often less pain and faster recovery. ?

The school of Medicine of the University of Wisconsin.
Claims: “Surgeons at the University of Wisconsin are at the forefront of the valve mitral repair surgery.” Our doctors repaired 87.5% of all the persons mentioned in this Institute for mitral valve surgery. “It is much higher than the average 50% national.”

The University of Maryland Medical Center.
Claim (of a UMM 28 September 2009 press release press):
“Now, after a study of six years, the Medical Centre at the University of Maryland in Baltimore of surgeons concluded that minimally invasive valve mitral repair techniques, by only an incision of two inches in the right side of the chest, are safe, sustainable and effective.” The results are published in the September 2009 annals of surgery. The study adds to evidence that the risk of heart problems varies according to circadian rhythms of the body – the cycles of 24 hours that affect sleep, the production of the hormone, body temperature and the other essential functions.
